When every glamorous A-lister descends upon the Venice Film Festival red carpet (or any red carpet, for that matter), they are ready for their close up. While make-up artists play a key role in achieving a flawless finish, healthy skin is created over time – and most celebrities see a facialist before they make a public appearance.
Teresa Tarmey is one such expert. Her treatments are beloved for their efficacy, and she counts Julianne Moore, Rachel Weisz and Cate Blanchett among her starry clientele. So how does she get their skin so lifted, sculpted and glowy? “I start each treatment with a very gentle lactic acid – my own – to exfoliate, hydrate and help everything else I apply work well after it,” she tells Vogue. “And then I’ve been using an amazing new machine.”
Said machine is FaceStim, a device which utilises radiofrequency to help soften fine lines and boost collagen production while also stimulating facial muscles, which has an immediate firming effect. “Clients love it because it sculpts and delivers a noticeable lift on the skin, making them look more chiselled,” she explains, adding that results get better over time, too. “Then I give them a gentle massage.”
Radiofrequency has emerged as the celebrity treatment of choice, particularly pre-event, particularly because it requires no downtime. As Moore previously told me: “I use my face for a living – I need to make sure that I look like me and that my face is mobile. Radiofrequency is the way to do it.”
Working in collaboration with the glamorous Hotel Cipriani – ground zero for the festival’s stars – Tarmey sees three attendees a day while she’s in town. “There are always delays, so I like to keep my appointments to a minimum so I can be as flexible as possible – that way it’s not stressful for my clients,” she explains. “The worst thing you can do is rock up late or show you’re stressed in front of them, because they’re already under a lot of pressure. I like to be calm!” Well, when you’re treating Cate, Rachel and Julianne…
